Gotham’s latest offering, The Fearsome Dr. Crane, is in the can but, is it done or just the beginning? Spoilers ahead me mateys so if you haven’t seen it for yourself yet, tread lightly or be crushed with me spoilerific words!

Arrrgh.

Honestly, I don’t know why the pirate-ish talk is happening but it felt right. Who do you think would make a better pirate, Penguin or Fish? They have a lot in common! Both want above their means, egos are overly inflated, their arrogance is darn near fatal, they have an infinite number of lives (from the looks of it) and they have that mutual hate thing going on. Don’t you think they’d make a fearsomely dynamic crime duo if they were to ever team up?

Dr. Crane has decided to scare people to death, preying on unsuspecting phobiacs to learn their deepest fears and then using that fear to set the stage for their murder. Bone chillingly creepy! A sponsor of the first victim caught Harvey’s eye. She doesn’t hesitate to call him on his crap. He could probably use someone with a backbone! Let’s hope they have a chance since he rescued her from drowning and becoming another victim of Dr. Fearsome.

Jim went to return Barbara’s keys and found Selina squatting in Barbara’s empty apartment. She told him that she’d lied about seeing the Wayne’s killer and jumped off the balcony before he could press her for more information. Typical cat-like people, run in, do the deed and leave before you can blink! He later told Harvey that it’s not only over with Barbara (YAY!) but that he may have something going with the doctor from Arkham. Music to my ears, people!

Bruce could NOT be more serious! He needs a lot more Selina in his life so he can relax, have fun and smile more. The way he let Jim off the hook for making an “oath” he couldn’t keep, the promise to find the person who murdered his parents … he’s put a lot of thought into this. When he said he’d find the person himself, I kind of believed him. When Jim told Alfred that it wasn’t safe for Bruce to do so I think I saw a sparkle in Alfred’s eyes when he snarked that he’d just have to look after Bruce then. That does seem right up Alfred’s ally, saving the day from whatever scrape Bruce gets himself into, doesn’t it?

Penguin may be a master at gathering intel but he stinks at reading people! Arrogance does beget a fall, no? Sitting there making a show of self-importance for … Maroni? The wait staff? Who knows, but by George he found a smudge on his butter knife and someone was going to take care of it with no idea Fish was stabbing him in the back with a bigger knife. Again. It’s so back and forth with these two, her thinking she’s finally taken care of him and he’s dead, then him thinking he’s finally taken care of her and she’s dead, when, really, no one’s dead. And it surprises them each time! How funny!

Fish ratted Penguin out to Maroni, telling him Oswald’s been working for Falcone all along. Maroni decides to take Penguin to a cabin upstate, give him enough rope to hang himself with and see what happens. Robin Lord Taylor, the actor who plays Penguin, does awkward and uneasy well! Penguin knew something was up, asking Maroni when to expect the guy with the thing, Maroni’s cover for getting Penguin to the cabin, but Maroni wasn’t playing. He shut him down each time and immediately changed the subject, making poor Oswald more and more nervous.

Penguin waited until Maroni went out to get more firewood to rifle through Maroni’s bag, looking for a weapon to protect himself. He knew he was in trouble. What I want to know is, how did Penguin NOT know that gun was empty? I knew it wasn’t loaded. I bet you knew it wasn’t loaded. Penguin, as quick on his feet as he is, just doesn’t always think. I think Maroni wanted to see if Penguin would try to kill him. He set him up and Penguin fell for it, hook, line and sinker.

Calling the guy running the car crusher and telling him that he was Falcone’s right hand man and if he didn’t stop the car crushing from killing him Falcone would come and seek revenge? That was Penguin at his best! He’s good! Sometimes.

Fish is on a boat in a beautifully posh cabin. She’s going away for a bit to collect herself before making her reappearance in Gotham. She has her hooks in a LOT of people, the Captain of the boat being no different from the looks of it. Who was the military guy who stormed into her cabin? He killed the Captain with a gun but, once face to face with Fish, didn’t shoot her. Instead he ran at her as she was charging at him. Is this dude on her payroll? Old friend? Family? Enemy? I couldn’t tell! Burning question that one! Maybe he’s with some sort of pirate group and recognized an opportunity and thinks he’ll get a bigger payout if he delivers her alive to … Falcone? Maroni? A new seedy bad guy?

Will have to wait until next week to find out. I understand that Dr. Crane (Dr. Fearsome) is Scarecrow’s father and I’m assuming that’s what the previews for next week referenced when they said “villains will rise”. Dr. Crane’s son is aware of what he’s doing, on some level. Is he collecting adrenal glands for his son? If so, ….. why?
